Everton in line for further nine-point deduction after 777 Partners development
Alex Crook has suggested “there is every chance” Everton are docked nine more points next season after a development involving 777 Partners.
The investment fund was this week granted a last-minute extension to repay a £160million loan that links into its takeover at Goodison Park [The Guardian].
In the view of talkSPORT reporter Crook, however, the uncertainty surrounding 777 could ultimately lead to a further points deduction.
“By extending that deadline, they’re just ensuring they don’t get any more points docked this season – that would almost certainly result in relegation,” he said on the Premier League All Access podcast [19 April, 45m 04s].
“But even if they do stay up, there is every chance they could start next season on minus nine points. Again, you have to feel sorry for the suffering supporters. There’s not much light at the end of the tunnel.”
How many points have Everton had deducted?
Everton, as a reminder, have already been docked eight points by the Premier League this season for two breaches of financial rules.
The Toffees seem to be going from one crisis to another, though, and the future looks no brighter regardless of whether 777 takes over or not.
Many believe that Everton would be better off taking their chances of finding an alternative buyer, but that is easier said than done.
It may well be that the club’s hand – or more specifically Farhad Moshiri’s – is forced if 777 is not granted approval to finalise the takeover.
If the takeover situation leads to the Toffees being hit with another nine-point deduction, however, then supporters will rightly be furious.
777’s financial history is murky to say the least, and it may well be that Everton learn about that the hard way. As ever, it is the supporters who will be hardest hit.
