Danny Murphy gushes over ‘fantastic’ Dominic Calvert-Lewin after Everton win v Liverpool

Danny Murphy has gushed over Everton forward Danny Mills for his “fantastic” performance in the Toffees’ win over Liverpool.

Sean Dyche’s Toffees picked up a first Merseyside derby win at Goodison Park since 2010 as they ran out 2-0 winners on Wednesday (24 April) thanks to excellent goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Calvert-Lewin.

While pundits and supporters have been quick to slam the Reds for their poor display in possession, BBC Sport pundit Murphy heaped praise on Everton striker Calvert-Lewin, not only for his goal but his work out of possession.

Speaking on Match of the Day (24 April, 1:30) he said: “It was epitomised by Calvert-Lewin, one of his best games of the season I would suggest. In every aspect of his play, we know his qualities.

“This is obviously offside as we know but it showed his sharpness. Again here, set plays, he’s free on the back post which is crazy here when we know his power. It’s not always great to watch but it’s effective and difficult to play against.

“He gets the rewards of his great performance, yes why is he on the back post? Where is Van Dijk? Why is Trent not blocking him? A man of his quality in the air, it’s a fantastic leap, but you can’t be free.”

Wednesday night’s win felt like a huge moment in the Toffees’ push to avoid relegation from the Premier League. While the win over Forest was a small step in the right direction, the Merseyside derby win was a leap.

It wasn’t necessarily the prettiest display, but Dyche’s side worked incredibly hard both in and out of possession to give themselves the best chance of claiming all three points and that was epitomised completely by Calvert-Lewin.

The Everton forward has been slammed by pundits and supporters alike for his performances so far this season, but when his team needed him the most he came alive and didn’t give Virgil van Dijk or the rest of the Liverpool backline a moment to rest.

Hopefully, he can carry that form into the remainder of the season to help the Toffees get over the line. If he maintains this performance level, he could well be the subject of some transfer interest come the end of the season.
