Joe Thomas shares what happened at Goodison Park after Everton v Liverpool
Everton manager Sean Dyche’s fandom of Green Day was met with a response from the club after beating Liverpool in the Merseyside derby, according to Joe Thomas.
The Liverpool Echo journalist shared that as Goodison Park was emptying following Everton’s 2-0 victory, the Green Day song “Welcome to Paradise” was played over the stadium’s PA system.
This tribute came after Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong posted an edited photo of himself in an Everton shirt, following comments made on Football Music and Me podcast by Dyche about his love for the band.
Noticing the club’s reciprocated homage to the group, Thomas said: “Dyche, a big music fan, had spoken of his love for the group and urged people to see them.
“Armstrong quickly responded by posting onto Instagram a photo that featured an Everton player signing a contract wearing a Blues shirt, with Armstrong’s own face put on the image.
“As Goodison emptied, someone on the PA system offered a nod to the new-found Everton and Green Day relationship by playing the band’s hit: ‘Welcome to Paradise’.”
Days looking greener for Everton after huge Merseyside Derby win
Everton playing ‘Welcome to Paradise” immediately after the Merseyside derby suggested just how good the mood was inside Goodison Park on 24 April, as the Toffees defeated arch-rivals Liverpool 2-0 to win three crucial Premier League points.
Not only did the victory inflict damage on Liverpool’s title hopes, it also moved Everton eight points clear of the relegation zone, massively boosting their chances of survival following a third straight home win and clean sheet in a row.

With games against two of the four sides below them still to come, Everton fans will be dreaming of more points and guaranteed top-flight safety, allowing them to finally look forward to the new season rather than constantly looking over their shoulders.
Next season promises to be one of significant change for the club too, with potential new ownership, and changes to the playing squad.
Everton’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock has proven to be a stumbling block for prospective new owners 777 Partners, but the shiny new venue should hopefully open up new revenue streams for the club.
The club will look to raise money via other events, such as concerts, in the stadium too. If only there was a band of rockstars whom they have a newfound connection with…
