talkSPORT broadcaster makes Everton ‘prime Barcelona’ joke

talkSPORT broadcaster Tom Rennie joked Everton always turn into “prime Barcelona” in April after the Toffees defeated Liverpool 2-0 in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday (24 April).

The Football Show host made the comment on X after the Toffees overcame their rivals to make it three wins from their last four matches, all of which have included clean sheets, and significantly boost their Premier League survival hopes.

Everton have defeated Burnley, Nottingham Forest and now Liverpool since the start of April, moving Sean Dyche’s side eight points clear of the relegation zone in the process.

Rennie joked about Everton’s canny knack of turning it on in April, posting: “Everton turning into prime Barcelona every April to stay in the league is one of the weirdest ongoing Barclays (Premier League) narratives.”

Everton edge closer to Premier League survival with Liverpool win

Everton were worthy winners in the Merseyside derby, scoring in each half through Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin and being resolute at the back to keep a third successive Goodison Park clean sheet.

Despite a 6-0 loss at Chelsea in between the narrow victories over Burnley and Nottingham Forest, the Toffees are hitting form just at the right time, and three straight victories at Goodison is hugely positive and form that has opened up a priceless eight-point gap to the bottom three.

Branthwaite continued his rise to stardom by squeezing a frantic finish beneath Alisson to put Everton 1-0 up, and Calvert-Lewin’s towering second-half header came following some match-saving parries from Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Their style of play may not quite be on the levels of “prime Barcelona” yet, but after it worked to perfection and put a serious dent in their biggest rivals’ title hopes, Everton fans will be happy to take on any moniker whatsoever as long as they’re winning games in the process.
