Jamie Carragher and Ian Wright clash over Everton v Brentford score prediction
Jamie Carragher and Ian Wright clashed over their predictions for the upcoming Premier League clash between Everton and Brentford.
The Toffees all but secured their Premier League safety with a 2-0 win over Liverpool on Wednesday 24 April, while the Bees claimed a dominant 5-1 win over Luton in their last outing at the weekend.
But when asked to pick their result for the clash on Saturday 27 April at Goodison Park on the Stick to Football podcast (25 April), Carragher and Wright clashed after the former Anfield star picked a draw.
“I actually thought he [Dyche] might rest players [vs Liverpool], but as an Everton manager against Liverpool going for the title, you’ve got to try and stop them,” Carragher said. “I’m saying 1-1 [vs Brentford].
Wright was audibly shocked by the prediction, which led to Carragher expanding.
“Have you seen them? You were shocked that I said Everton v Brentford would be a draw?”
That led to Wright replying and admitting he expected a Brentford victory.
“Yeah I was, yeah, because I feel Brentford will beat them,” he said.
Carragher then added that, “It’s one of those games, if they’re drawing at half-time they’re both happy aren’t they?”
And Wright’s team were in agreement with him, as both Roy Keane and Jill Scott backed a 2-1 away win on the day.
Everton not safe from relegation yet
As much as the wins over Nottingham Forest and Liverpool have been absolutely huge for the Toffees, the job isn’t completely done yet in terms of securing safety.
There are eight points between the club and the relegation zone currently with four games remaining, so it would take an almighty effort and collapse for Dyche’s team to go down now. But they have only just come off a run of 15 games without a win.
That means Dyche has to be ready to go with a strong team once again, knowing the Goodison Park crowd will be absolutely roaring on Saturday evening.
A draw would be a solid result and could be enough for safety, and Brentford don’t have much to play for right now so Wright’s surprise at that prediction was slightly odd.
But so long as the team stay up and turn in another fighting performance like they did on Wednesday, the fans will be delighted.
