Jim Beglin wowed by ‘flying’ Idrissa Gueye after Everton win v Brentford

Everton defeated Brentford 1-0 to make it four home victories on the bounce at Goodison Park, with an “absolutely lovely” finish from Idrissa Gueye leaving Jim Beglin wowed.

The Senegalese midfielder netted his second goal in three games to put Everton into the lead after 60 minutes, and the beIn Sports pundit was delighted with his contribution.

The Toffees’ winning goal came after a huge scramble in Brentford’s box following a floated ball over the top by Gueye, with Beglin praising the 34-year-old’s willingness to stay alive to the chance.

As he and his Everton team-mates celebrated, Beglin said: “It’s a kindly break, but what you’ve got to give him credit for is that he wasn’t standing outside the box just lurking and hoping that something might come his way.

“(Gueye’s) actually followed the play into the box, and when it did break, it’s an absolutely lovely finish.

“It’s very unlike him, if I may say that because that’s a goal against Nottingham Forest and now against Brentford. He’s flying.”

Idrissa Gueye leads Everton to Premier League survival

Everton have roared into form at exactly the right time this season, winning 12 points from 15 available in April so far.

In four home games at Goodison Park, the Toffees have four straight victories without conceding a goal, snapping a 13-game winless run in fine style.

Relegation rivals Nottingham Forest and city rivals Liverpool have both been dispatched by 2-0 scorelines in the past week alone and while Gueye’s goal proved to be the decisive strike against Brentford, Everton did have further chances to extend their lead.

Brentford had four shots on target to Everton’s one, but that one found the back of the net, and long-range efforts from Dwight McNeil and James Garner came close to adding to Gueye’s strike before striking the crossbar.

Gueye is just one of the players making his presence count at a crucial time for Everton, and after two decisive goals within a week for the club, he’s helped Sean Dyche’s side preserve their Premier League status for another season at least.
