Kieran Maguire shares Everton points deduction verdict amid Chelsea comparison

Kieran Maguire has insisted that Everton and Nottingham Forest can consider themselves unlucky at being on the wrong side of time ahead of changes to the Premier League’s financial rules.

The football finance expert explained that had the clubs spent as much as they did, 12 years ago, they would have been fine – as seen with Chelsea and Manchester City.

This comes following proposed changes to the rules which would now see clubs allowed to spend up to five times the broadcast revenue of the bottom-placed team.

Speaking live on talkSPORT [30 April, 11:15], Jim White questioned: “After Nottingham Forest and Everton were handed points deductions, have they been the victims of bad timing in all of this?”

To which Maguire answered “yes” and added: “If Everton or Nottingham Forest had spent the amount of money that they have done, 12 years ago, before the introduction of FFP, in a similar way to what we’ve seen with Chelsea and Manchester City, those days have gone.

“Forest and Everton have been on the wrong side of time.”

Kieran Maguire shares new Everton points deduction verdict

Sadly, this new verdict won’t come as much of a surprise to the fans at Goodison Park. Experimental points deductions were handed out in what has been a mess from start to finish, just for the rules to change before anybody else suffers.

This salary cap has been a talking point for Premier League clubs for a while, and with meetings now taking place ahead of the summer, the wheels could be set in motion to level the financial playing field in the top flight.

Points deductions handed to both Everton and Nottingham Forest this season sparked clubs into action as they began to realise what their excessive spending could result in – as shown during the quiet January transfer window.

Ultimately, the two clubs have suffered at the hands of the Premier League despite those before, and likely now those after, being allowed to spend more than either Everton or Forest spend with no repercussions.
