Everton could have walked away from Bramley-Moore Dock build in new Goodison Park update
Everton could have walked away from the Bramley-Moore Dock stadium build and stayed at Goodison Park after Alisher Usmanov was sanctioned, according to ESPN.
The Toffees are set to move to their new stadium at the start of the 2025/26 season but are under severe financial pressure with 777 Partners providing over £200m in funds for the running costs of the club.
A lot of these financial problems started when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 and large sponsor Usmanov was sanctioned, leaving the Toffees with a hole in their finances.
According to a report (2 May), the club had the option to walk away from the project at the time and remain at their iconic ground but opted against that “for the future of the club”.
“The club was left with two options,” a source told ESPN. “Walk away from the stadium project, leave it half-built and stay at Goodison Park, or try to find a way to build it by borrowing money from different sources. For the future of the club, it had to be the latter.”
Did Everton make the right decision with Bramley-Moore Dock?
When the decision to build a new stadium for the club was announced, most people were under the impression that Everton would be much further along than they currently are.
Moshiri was spending crazy amounts of money to try and bring the squad forward and to start competing, even bringing in managers like the acclaimed Carlo Ancelotti.
But all he did was create a culture of mediocrity at the club and overpaid players were suddenly cozy with not performing, which has led to huge problems in recent seasons.

The club only narrowly avoided relegation in each of the last three campaigns, and the financial problems are threatening the future of the club all while a glorious new stadium gets built and the legendary Goodison Park prepares for a farewell.
As it stands they may have been better off calling it off and sticking with what they know, but hopefully in years to come fans can look back on the decision as a good one and fans will be able to enjoy success in their shiny new ground.
