Jamie Carragher wowed what ‘unplayable’ Dominic Calvert-Lewin did for Everton v Luton Town
Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin blew Jamie Carragher away with an “unplayable” moment in the Toffees’ showdown with Luton Town.
The Blues extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League with a 1-1 draw against the Hatters at Kenilworth Road on Friday (3 May) with Calvert-Lewin’s first-half penalty earning a well-deserved point in a cagey clash.
While the English international was slightly fortunate to see his penalty brush past Thomas Kaminski’s trailing leg, he was unfortunate to be denied by the keeper as he stunned Carragher with a magnificent leap and header.
Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event (3 May, 21:40) he said: “Dwight McNeil does well but that leap from Calvert-Lewin. We said before the game that when he is at his best, he is unplayable.
“For any centre-back that spring you just can’t deal with it.”
Will Dominic Calvert-Lewin leave Everton in the summer transfer window?
As Carragher suggested, when Calvert-Lewin is playing like that, he is undefendable. The striker possesses a presence at the top end of the pitch that very few strikers in world football can compare with.
At Kenilworth Road, the Toffees striker was left at the top end of the field on his own for much of the game, but he battled away and held the ball up well to bring his teammates into the game and work the home side’s backline.

He isn’t perfect and he does lack the composure that some of the division’s best forwards have, but he has been so important to Everton this season and you have to wonder where they would have ended up without his goals.
The next challenge will be keeping him at Goodison beyond the end of the season. Calvert-Lewin will almost certainly interest a couple of teams higher up the Premier League and Everton’s off-the-field issues could open the door to secure his signature.
