Everton want to seal Teden Mengi transfer as Jarrad Branthwaite replacement

Everton are monitoring Luton Town defender Teden Mengi as they draw up a list of possible replacements should Jarrad Branthwaite be sold this summer, according to Football Transfers.

The report on 6 May reveals that Mengi is expected to leave Luton at the end of the season and is also attracting interest from European clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen.

Branthwaite is also likely to move on as Everton look to generate a substantial profit from the defender in light of their financial predicament.

Could Teden Mengi replace Jarrad Branthwaite at Everton?

Mengi joined Luton last summer from Manchester United, having made just two first-team appearances for the Red Devils – both off the bench in European competition.

The 22-year-old was afforded limited opportunities out on loan at Birmingham City and Derby County in 2020/21 and 2021/22 before leaving United permanently for Luton, where he has made a strong impression in his debut campaign.

In fact, Everton got the chance to assess him as recently as 3 May, during the 1-1 draw between the two teams on Merseyside.

The central defender has been busy defensively for the Hatters in their bid to avoid the drop, making an average of 5.18 clearances and 4.0 tackles or interceptions per 90 in the Premier League this season [FBref].

Under head coach Sean Dyche, Everton boasts the fourth-best defensive record in the Premier League – behind only the division’s top three of Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool – and Branthwaite contributed significantly to that solidity.

Mengi’s defensive activity demonstrates that he has the capability to perform as part of a unit that is asked to do a great deal of defending.

If he arrives at Goodison Park this summer – with Branthwaite moving on – he will have big shoes to fill.
