Everton ‘most likely’ new owners named as 777 Partners takeover was ‘never’ going to suceed
MSP Sports Capital are now the “most likely” to complete a takeover of Everton as 777 Partners attempt now looks set to fail, according to Alex Crook.
The talkSPORT reporter spoke live on the station on 10 May to claim that the current deal, announced back in September, was “never” going to succeed and criticised Farhad Moshiri for wasting so much time on it.
Now with reports emerging that there are multiple alternative US options to instead take control of the club [Daily Mail, 9 May] Crook says he has been told it is MSP, who are already one of the club’s creditors after loaning close to £160million following a failed attempt secure a minority share last year, are leading the race.
He said (11.55am): “You look into 777, their business dealings and the way they run their other sports enterprises, they were never going to get approved by the Premier League so Moshiri has wasted a lot of time really in even trying to get this deal over the line.
“Andy Bell and George Downing… my understanding is that both of those wealthy Everton fans are owed quite a substantial amount of money by the football club and that’s where I think these reports of their interest are coming from, maybe they would turn that debt into a shareholding.
“It’s the same with MSP Sports Capital, who are another American firm who are owed around £160m by Everton, and it’s been suggested to me that actually they’re the most likely to complete a takeover, and again transfer their debt into shares.”
Are MSP Sports Capital the next Everton owners?
It seems that the long-espoused confidence in 777 getting their buy out completed has now amounted to the facade that some have always suggested.
The events around the Miami-based group did suggest that as soon as the initial period passed it was only growing more unlikely that their bid would end in success for them, but the claims of the Toffees’ majority shareholder indicated otherwise.
Whether Moshiri has in fact only just realised that for himself, whether it is the end of a season approaching with the campaign successfully funded by nearly £200m from 777 that has made the difference, or if the most recent lawsuits and business issues are what has changed his mind only he will truly know.
But if MSP are actually ready to exercise the clause in their un-repaid loan deal to now acquire majority control then the past year can surely go down as little other than a messy exercise in wasting time and money, which hasn’t done anything for Everton itself.

The New York firm were blocked from becoming minority owners last summer by fellow creditors Rights & Media Funding Ltd [The Athletic, 25 August], so if they end up majority owners after a chaotic eight-month stint of 777 failing to come in then supporters will justifiably wonder what the point of all this was.
The Esk (9 May) has detailed how it appears to be far less straightforward than MSP simply taking over and looking ahead so it seems like there could be a lot more wrangling before a final answer eventually emerges, but it does seem as if the 777 saga is finally drawing to a close.
