Sammie Szmodics looks open to summer Everton transfer after new Premier League admission

Blackburn Rovers star Sammie Szmodics appears to be open to a potential summer transfer to Everton after making a new Premier League admission.

Reports emerged suggesting the Toffees were interested in signing the Championship top-scorer as part of a double transfer raid at Ewood Park, alongside Jacob Greaves who is viewed as a Jarrad Branthwaite replacement [FootballTransfers, 1 May].

While Szmodics has insisted that his situation is out of his hands due to the length of his contract with Blackburn, the Irish International did admit he would be “stupid” not to consider a move to the Premier League.

Speaking on The No Tippy Tappy Football podcast (9 May, 27:20) he said: “To stay [at Blackburn] it’s out of my hands, I’ve got two and a half years, I love playing for the football club.

“But obviously, there’s speculation when you’ve scored 33 goals and it’s just a case of me enjoying my summer and seeing what’s out there. I don’t think anyone would hold a grudge against me if a Premier League team came knocking, it’s everyone’s dream to go and play in the Premier League.

“I’m not saying that opportunity will arise but I don’t think people can blame anyone if they go and play in the Premier League. To go and really test yourself is what you want to do so if a Premier League team came knocking, it would be stupid for me not to see what happens.”

Will Everton sign Blackburn Rovers star Sammie Szmodics during the summer transfer window at Goodison Park?

Everton are not in the best place financially right now, particularly as 777 Partners’ takeover continues to falter, but they should be doing everything they can to try and bring Szmodics to Merseyside when the transfer window opens.

The attacking midfielder’s eye for goal would massively reduce the pressure on Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the top end of the pitch and his style of playing just off of the frontman would suit Sean Dyche’s direct style.

Agreeing on personal terms is unlikely to be an issue as the 28-year-old seems incredibly keen to make the step up to the top flight so the only potential stumbling block would be agreeing a transfer fee with Blackburn.

Even then, the Blues managed to negotiate a reasonable fee for both Beto and Youseff Chermiti last summer. It wouldn’t be a total shock if they managed to do the same again at the end of the season.

If the money side of negotiations can be agreed upon, this could be a deal to keep an eye on this summer. It would be a bit of a gamble for the Blues, but Szmodics has shown this season he is capable of extraordinary things.
