Mike Dean reacts to Everton v Sheffield United controversy live on air, ‘over the top’
Mike Dean felt Jack Robinson’s reaction to a challenge from Dominic Calvert-Lewin in Everton versus Sheffield United was “over the top”.
Calvert-Lewin was judged to have fouled the Blades defender in the first half of the Premier League encounter at Goodison Park, which the hosts won 1-0.
Robinson reacted furiously and shoved the Toffees’ forward causing a coming together between both sets of players and ultimately seeing both players cautioned.
Reacting live on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, former Premier League referee Dean said: “He’s give the free-kick to Sheffield United, Calvert-Lewin’s just nudged him with his elbow nothing major but the reaction’s a bit over the top they had the free-kick anyway, so two yellow cards unfortunately.”
Dominic Calvert-Lewin unfortunate to be booked in Everton v Sheffield United
To say this whole incident was a little soft would be a complete understatement and the Goodison Park faithful were left rightly furious when a yellow card was brandished to Calvert-Lewin.
A free-kick would have been fine, it would have produced a few moans and groans from the home fans, but that should have been the end of it.

Robinson’s overreaction meant that both players ended up going into the book, though, which was hugely frustrating and entirely avoidable.
It did at least bring a bit of a talking point to a first half that hadn’t entirely kicked into life, perhaps a little understandably given Everton had already secured their place in the Premier League for next season and the Blades’ sorry stay in the top flight has come to an end meaning it’s back to the Championship they are headed.
Still Dean was right, it was all a little bit over the top.
