Alan Shearer wowed by ‘brilliant’ Everton footage on Match of the Day v Sheffield United

Everton secured victory in their final home match of the season on Saturday, and Alan Shearer was among those in awe of the Toffees’ winning goal against Sheffield United.

Speaking on Match of the Day [11 May, 1:28:06], Shearer and Micah Richards complimented the build-up to Abdoulaye Doucoure’s first-half header which was enough to seal the points at Goodison Park.

Everton have now hit the 40-point mark in the Premier League this season, despite Sean Dyche’s men contending with an eight-point deduction – part of which the club withdrew their appeal towards earlier this week.

“Doucoure’s always got those legs in midfield, he’s making a run, brilliant ball in from [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin, and he’s just got to make that run in – excellent,” Richards said.

“Brilliant. How do you want it?!”, added Shearer, praising the pinpoint accuracy of Calvert-Lewin’s cross for the Malian.

What a brilliant job [Dyche] has done this season in difficult circumstances,” he continued.

Everton hope to hold onto key assets

Everton’s uncertain future at board level is the reason fans cannot settle regarding where their prized performers will be after this summer.

Dyche’s side have now won five of their last seven to become a late-season form team in the Premier League, keeping five clean sheets and showing excellent character to bounce back from their anomalous heavy defeat at Chelsea.

The key components of the Blues side – namely the likes of Doucoure, Jarrad Branthwaite and Jordan Pickford – would have to be sacrificed if the club end up in administration – a distinct possibility following the protracted saga of the proposed 777 Partners takeover.

Should the chaos be resolved in a practical manner on Merseyside, and Dyche is eager to continue taking the reins, Everton fans can begin to hope for a long-awaited season out of relegation trouble and having felt like they have turned a corner. But plenty has to be boxed off first.
