Dele Alli to leave Everton after fans slapped in the face amid Goodison Park no show
Dele Alli looks all but certain to leave Everton this summer when his contract expires, but has disappointed fans once again without even stepping on the pitch.
The former England international is set to see his time on Merseyside come to an end after two-and-a-half years, having not played for the club at all in either of the last two seasons due to injury and a loan at Besiktas.
But fans have been empathetic towards the attacking midfielder, who has admitted to dealing with mental health issues in that period and overcame an addiction to sleeping pills also.
However there is no doubting that his time at the club has been a total flop, yet fans have once again been left angered by the 28-year-old for something he didn’t do.
Dele Alli’s Goodison no show is a slap in the face to fans
Everton ended their penultimate Goodison Park campaign with a 1-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday (11 May), making it four consecutive wins and clean sheets in the process.
That result means that without their eight-point deductions this season they would be sat in 11th place in the table, 22 points clear of relegation, in what should be regarded as a highly successful season for the Toffees.
As is standard the team did a lap of honour after the final whistle with the squad applauding the fans, but Dele was conspicuous by his absence and it certainly didn’t go unnoticed by fans.
Considering all the support the club have given him during his time there, both with injuries and with his personal problems, and how fans have respected his privacy, it was a slap in the face for him to not show up at least.
He has reportedly been earning £100k per-week and not played even a second of football, so the least he could do is show some appreciation to the club at the end of another tough season.
His career at the club is almost certainly over. He won’t be offered a new contract considering the financial situation at Everton and Sean Dyche was always unlikely to find a place for him in his squad.
Dele has essentially washed his hands of the club before he needed to, and now it’s time for fans to do the same with him.
