James Rodriguez hints at Everton return this summer in social media post

Former Everton star James Rodriguez has hinted that he could be open to a return to Goodison Park this summer.

The Colombia international spent one season with the Toffees under Carlo Ancelotti before being moved on to Qatari side Al Rayyan by Rafa Benitez as he didn’t fit into his plans.

He is now playing his trade in Brazil with Serie A side Sao Paulo, but has fallen out with the new manager and has been left out of the matchday squad in each of the last three games.

EvertonHub Instagram account (14 May) posted on their page a screenshot of the situation and tagged the playmaker in the caption asking him to “come home”, and the former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich star replied cheekily in the comments.

“Last dance?” he wrote, with a funny face emoji and a blue heart.

Everton must avoid James Rodriguez fairytale return

While it’s always great to see a top footballer come to your football club, and especially if they are returning, the club have to be really smart this summer.

Financially the club are in disarray and Sean Dyche will know that there are certain areas of his squad that need to be targetted as a priority more than others.

You can never have too many goals or assists in the squad, but Rodriguez is now 32-years-old and hasn’t been playing at a high level for a long time.

His spell in Qatar was poor, then he struggled at Olympiacos and is now in Brazil struggling to get a game. He simply wouldn’t be good enough for Everton anymore.

Dyche has his way of playing and the reality is that Rodriguez doesn’t fit that way. His wages would likely be high too, and it’s just something the club don’t need. It’s a nice thought, but it shouldn’t happen.
