Ally McCoist blown away by what ‘phenomenal’ Seamus Coleman did for Everton v Arsenal

Everton veteran Seamus Coleman blew Ally McCoist with a “tremendous” piece of defending in the first half of the Toffees’ clash with Arsenal.

Sean Dyche’s side headed into the break level at 1-1 with the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday (19 May) as Idrissa Gueye’s deflected fee-kick cancelled out by a strike from Takehiro Tomiyasu.

While the Gunners dominated possession of the ball and consistently got into good areas of the field, Dyche’s defence stood strong with an excellent tackle from Coleman impressing McCoist on commentary.

Speaking on TNT Sport on Sunday (19 May, 16:16) he said: “What a save that is from Pickford, he missed the little nutmeg and he hammers it right cross him and that’s a big hand.

“He probably deserves his little bit of luck with tremendous defending from Coleman who comes across. It’s great defending it really is.

“He has been a phenomenal servant.”

Will Seamus Coleman leave Everton and Goodison Park in the summer transfer window?

It is impossible to find an Everton supporter who has a bad word to say about Coleman. The Irish international may be a veteran these days, but he is still more than capable of producing moments of quality as he did on Sunday.

The right-back was incredibly quick to get ahead of the on-rushing Arsenal attackers to clear following the miraculous save from Jordan Pickford and he even managed to find a way to clear the ball away from the net.

With the Toffees confirming a matter of days ago that they had offered the skipper a contract extension, the first half against Arsenal showed that Coleman should be signing on the dotted line. He still has plenty to offer in a blue shirt.

He may not have to start every game, but with Nathan Patterson sidelined for much of the summer and Ashley Young closing in on 40, Dyche needs the defensive depth and there are few more reliable than the 35-year-old.
