Brentford make Neal Maupay transfer announcement as Everton loan nears end

Brentford have confirmed that Neal Maupay is returning to parent club Everton once his loan deal expires.

The Frenchman has spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan with the Bees and has impressed with six goals and three assists in 18 Premier League games.

However, amid suggestions that Maupay could remain at Brentford permanently beyond this season, that does not look like being the case.

In a statement on their website on Sunday (19 May), Brentford confirmed that Maupay will return to Goodison Park, while fellow loanee Sergio Reguilon is heading back to Tottenham.

Shandon Baptiste, Saman Ghoddos and Charlie Goode will also depart the Gtech Community Stadium when their deals expire on 30 June.

Does Neal Maupay have a future at Everton?

Given how little he has offered since joining in a £15million deal from Brighton and Hove Albion in August 2022, the easy answer is ‘no’.

However, Everton are not exactly in a position whereby they can just farm off £15m players because they have not made the impact expected.

In the case of Maupay, his time away from Merseyside has helped him to regain some confidence and that can only be a good thing – even if he has been up to his old tricks on social media.

There is clearly a talented player in there, one who has now been directly involved in 42 Premier League goals either side of his poor maiden campaign at Goodison Park.

The Toffees are not going to be able to bring in star quality over the summer, so having Maupay back in the squad can be the classic ‘like a new signing’.

Everton
Maupay, on loan for the season at Brentford, is a fan favourite at some clubs and a pariah at others.

There is always the option of selling him to help bring in some much-needed cash, but the club then risk losing a fair amount on what they paid just two years ago.

For now, let’s welcome back Maupay in the hope that he can strike up a killer partnership with Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the second time of asking.

In other Everton news, the club want to sign a £15.7million international winger.
