Tony Bellew rages at ‘insane’ Everton punishment live on air in Manchester City verdict

Tony Bellew has labelled the Premier League’s punishment of Everton “insane” live on talkSPORT while Manchester City remain unpunished.

Sean Dyche’s side managed to avoid the drop from the Premier League despite being hit with two separate point deductions this season for breaches of the league’s profit and sustainability regulations.

While there is still a possibility the Toffees could be handed a third deduction next season, former boxer and Everton fan Bellew has hit out at the fact that City remain without punishment for an alleged 115 charges.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday (10 May, 8:46) he said: “The league never surprises me and the way that it targets the so-called smaller clubs.

“The Premier League forgets that we’re one of the big clubs that invented the league and the way that we’ve been treated is unfair and unjust. To be deducted eight points from one set of charges while Nottingham Forest have been deducted two points for lesser charges is insane.

“Let’s not even get onto Manchester City because if all their charges come to light and fruition, those guys are going to be in the conference next season.

“It’s insane, we’ve been unfairly treated, they’ve tried to make an example of us but guess what, you’ve picked the wrong team to make an example of.”

Will Manchester City be punished live Everton for FFP breaches?

Everton supporters have made their feelings towards the Premier League known throughout the Premier League season, with various protests from fans voicing their frustration with the Toffees’ punishment.

It does seem ridiculous that only the Blues and Forest have actually been handed deductions when the current champions have allegedly broken the regulations 115 times. The league is not a level playing field currently.

Hopefully, some clarity will emerge around Pep Guardiola’s side sooner rather than later as it is so frustrating to repeatedly hear Richard Masters suggest that a date has been set for without revealing when it is.

Whether or not similar penalties will be handed out at the Etihad as were at Goodison Park a matter of months ago, but it doesn’t feel like anything will be done imminently.
