Newcastle United in talks over ‘expensive’ Dominic Calvert-Lewin deal with Everton
Newcastle United are lining up a move for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin as part of an expensive double transfer swoop this summer, according to Luke Edwards.
The Telegraph journalist reported on Thursday (23 May) that the Magpies have been tracking the Toffees striker for the last two years as a potential direct replacement for Callum Wilson who could leave this summer.
Newcastle’s interest in both Calvert-Lewin and West Ham star Jarrod Bowen is genuine, but the Magpies are aware that both moves could well prove to be expensive and players may have to be sold to fund the transfers.
The former England international’s name has featured predominantly in Newcastle’s recruitment meetings and he has been included on a very short list of transfer targets as Eddie Howe looks to add to his squad at St James’ Park.
Will Everton sell Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Newcastle United this summer?
Over the last few seasons, Everton have been incredibly reliant on the goals of Calvert-Lewin to fire them to Premier League safety and without bim they would almost certainly be in the Championship right now.
However, the bleak financial situation at Goodison Park partnered with 777 Partners stalled takeover means that the Toffees could well have to sell players if the right offer is made for them this summer, especially if it is a big-money move.
Calvert-Lewin only has a year left on his contract with Sean Dyche’s side and while the Everton boss will be reluctant to lose his main source of goals, he will understand that this could be a sacrifice made to balance the books.
Hopefully, the Blues will fight their corner amid any interest and at least ensure that they are able to receive a big fee for their number nine. But it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him plying his trade elsewhere next season.
If the striker does leave this summer, Dyche will have to be backed to bring in a new centre-forward because neither Beto nor Youseff Chermiti look ready to lead the line week in and week out in the Premier League.
