Everton favourites for Kalvin Phillips transfer in Sean Dyche update

Everton have emerged as the favourites to sign Kalvin Phillips on loan from Manchester City, according to TEAMtalk.

The report on 30 May reveals that Leeds had a loan deal agreed “in principle” if they won promotion back to the Premier League, but their failure to do so has seen them drop out of the race, while Newcastle have also stepped back.

Sean Dyche is said to be an admirer of Phillips and believes he can revive the midfielder’s career at Goodison Park.

Would Kalvin Phillips be a good signing for Everton?

Given Everton’s financial issues, much of their summer transfer business is likely to revolve around smart, low-cost and low-risk deals.

A permanent deal for Phillips would not fall into that category but a loan deal may be a gamble worth taking for a player with a proven Premier League pedigree and who has won 31 caps for England.

The 28-year-old may be suffering from a crisis of confidence – that much was evidenced by how poorly his temporary switch to West Ham United went – but a player of his quality would not be available in such circumstances to Everton if not for his present situation.

If Dyche truly can get the Yorkshireman back to his best, Everton will be acquiring a top-quality midfielder for a season to cover for the likely sale of Amadou Onana. In the Toffees’ restrictive circumstances, it’s difficult to find fault with the logic behind such a move.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are in the hunt to sign the “new Mario Mandzukic”, Anton Matkovic.
