Sam Matterface explodes back at Everton fan after talkSPORT clip called out
TalkSPORT commentator Sam Matterface has responded to an Everton fan who criticised his assessment of which players the club will need to sell this summer.
Matterface bemoaned the reactionary nature of social media with a post on X, following a short clip of his conversation with Perry Groves regarding the Toffees’ precarious financial situation this summer.
After saying that Jarrad Branthwaite, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jordan Pickford could all be sold for a sum amounting to around £70million, Matterface made clear that his comments were part of a wider discussion on the club’s current issues.
He said via X: “This is what does me in about social media. This is not even a tenth of a wider conversation about serious financial issues – it’s the tail end of a discussion about what happens if vultures swoop on a club that need to sell.
“Shocked this is what you picked out.”
Everton fans need to be ready to farewell key players
There’s no two ways about it – Everton are in a perilous financial position, and the longer that prospective takeover talks between Farhad Moshiri and potential investors go on, the club’s debts will continue to increase.
While Matterface’s comments on the values of players like Branthwaite – whom the club have reportedly made clear is available for no less than £70million alone – may be wide of the mark, the Toffees are in far from a position of strength given their need for incoming cash.

Pickford and Calvert-Lewin, the latter of whom will be out of contract in 12 months and is yet to sign a new deal, will also attract attention as home-grown players and England internationals themselves.
It remains to be seen if, when and for how much the three players mentioned by Matterface will depart Goodison Park, but with takeover talks in limbo, debts increasing and a new stadium to pay for, Everton fans will likely be saying goodbye to some of their favourite Blues stars this summer.
In other Everton news, the Toffees’ debt with Rights and Media Funding is costing the club £30m in interest each year.
