Ally McCoist blasts Neal Maupay after what Everton flop did to Tottenham ace James Maddison

Ally McCoist has criticised Everton forward Neal Maupay live on talkSPORT after the Frenchman was judged to have taken a dig at James Maddison on social media.

McCoist [7 June, 08:53] blasted Maupay whilst on air with Ray Parlour and Alan Brazil for what appeared to be a provocative post in reaction to Maddison’s omission from England’s final 26-man Euros squad.

The divisive figure – who has spent the season on loan at former club Brentford – posted on X on Wednesday afternoon shortly after the news was confirmed that Maddison had left the Three Lions camp.

McCoist said: “He’s grinning from ear to ear in front of a dartboard with three darts. That’s poor, man.

“There must be a period – say, 24 hours – before you nail somebody.

“He’s definitely taking the mickey, there.”

Everton man Maupay, Tottenham man Maddison, and the context

The needle between Maupay and Maddison, both 27, appeared to originate from only a few months prior, when the Everton loanee scored for Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in January and mocked the midfielder’s “darts” celebration, which was then responded to by Spurs’ Richarlison later in the game.

After Spurs won that clash 3-2, Maddison and Maupay continued their rift on social media.

It’s worth mentioning in fairness to Maddison that Maupay himself was barely in contention for the France squad – the two nations are currently the bookies’ favourites for to triumph at Euro 2024, shortly followed by hosts Germany.

Neal Maupay has never been shy on social media

Fans of Maupay’s clubs and in the wider English game will be very aware of his comedic nature, which to some is endearingly against the grain of “robotic” footballers; others view the striker as unprofessional and a nuisance.

For the neutral, it’s a rather lighthearted and somewhat entertaining little personal battle which may rekindle once more next season.
