Aston Villa confidence grows to sign Everton star Amadou Onana as Douglas Luiz exit imminent

Aston Villa are growing in confidence that they can sign Amadou Onana from Everton this summer after making contact over a deal, according to TeamTalk.

Writing on their website (15 June), the news outlet report that Unai Emery’s side have enquired about the Belgium star about a potential £50million transfer this summer.

Everton are hopeful of selling to ease their PSR concerns before the end of the month, and help them to keep Jarrad Branthwaite, and Villa are now confident they can strike a deal.

Villa, who will play Champions League football in 2024/25 after a fourth-placed finish last season, are expected to sell Douglas Luiz to Juventus in a deal worth £15million plus Samuel Iling-Junior and Weston McKennie [Fabrizio Romano, 15 June] to help with their own PSR issues.

Everton smart to sell Amadou Onana instead of Jarrad Branthwaite

Big exits are expected at Goodison Park this summer, and Kevin Thelwell has already informed the fans to expect a big name to leave at some point.

There has been plenty of talk about Branthwaite being the man to leave amid strong interest from the top of the Premier League and even in Europe, but Manchester United’s opening bid was rejected last week.

But it’s clear that something will have to give at some point, and Onana is a player who is far more dispensable and replaceable to Everton and Sean Dyche than Branthwaite is.

The midfielder has found himself out of the team for spells at different points during his two years at the club while Branthwaite became undroppable in the 2023/24 campaign, so if they can ease their financial issues by selling the Belgian instead it would be golden for them.

However, nothing can happen unless a bid is actually made and right now that hasn’t happened. Time is ticking before the end of the month, so this is one to watch closely.

In other Everton news, Dan Friedkin could be set to sack Sean Dyche as manager once he completes his takeover of the club.
