Tim Iroegbunam en route for Everton medical as £9m transfer agreed
Tim Iroegbunam is on his way to Finch Farm to undergo a medical with Everton after a £9million deal was agreed with Aston Villa, according to The Secret Scout.
Writing on their official X account (20 June), the outlet reports that the midfielder’s transfer to Goodison Park is “moving fast” and a medical is set to take place on Thursday.
The Toffees want to bolster their midfield options after Andre Gomes and Dele Alli were released at the end of their contracts, with the youngster keen for more regular first-team minutes.
Everton and Aston Villa find PSR loophole with transfers
Iroegbunam is certainly a talented young midfielder and has his strengths in a Sean Dyche setup, but what Everton and Aston Villa have done with this deal is very clever.
Reports suggest Villa are trying to sign Lewis Dobbin in a separate transfer [The Athletic, 19 June], and it seems like a way for both clubs to bring in extra cash to help close the holes in their PSR accounts while also keeping their squad stocked with young talents.
Iroegbunam had a fine loan spell at QPR in 2022/23 but in 2023/24 didn’t play regularly under Unai Emery as Villa got Champions League football for the first time in the Premier League era.
But with Amadou Onana likely to leave the club as the Blues look to balance the books, plus Gomes and Dele leaving a central midfielder is a necessary addition to the squad.
It’s a deal that seems to make sense for all parties, and it’s a good start to the window for the club in what is a super important summer for all.
In other Everton news, the club want to sign a 20-cap international midfielder after he was relegated from a European top-five league last season.
