Belgian media react to Everton ace Amadou Onana after ‘disappointing’ display
Everton star Amadou Onana played 90 minutes as Belgium played out a 0-0 draw against Ukraine at Euro 2024 on Wednesday (26 June).
The stalemate saw the Red Devils progress to the knockout stages of the tournament while Toffees teammate Vitaliy Mykolenko was forced to pack his bags after finishing bottom of Group E.
Despite advancing to the next round, Belgian newspaper De Morgen [26 June] dubbed the match “disappointing”, with the national team unable to finish above Romania in the table.
Reacting to Onana’s display in midfield, Walfoot [26 June] handed him a 4/10 rating, writing: “Lining up Tielemans and Onana worked very well against Romania, but this time, Amadou played far too high at times. How can so many spaces be created in a midfield where he is supposed to reign supreme?”
Everton midfielder Amadou Onana hit with criticism after Belgium draw
A team with Belgium’s talent and calibre are expected to top their group at the European Championship, and that includes Toffees star Onana, who has lined up in midfield for all three games so far.
The 22-year-old has gained plenty of attention since arriving at Goodison Park two summers ago, having made 72 appearances in that time as one of Sean Dyche’s favoured midfielders.
Due to this, many teams are keeping tabs on Onana’s situation at the club this summer, which has not been helped by the player’s honest comments about trying to impress at Euro 2024.

However, it seems Everton are now open to a move for the midfield maestro in the summer transfer market, so his poor performance against Ukraine will do no parties any favours [The Mirror].
He should be given another chance to impress, though, with the Red Devils heading through to the next round, where they face off against Kylian Mbappe’s France. Onana will need to be at the top of his game if they stand any chance of progressing further in the competition.
