Everton ace Beto on Fenerbahce transfer radar as Jose Mourinho eyes new striker

Jose Mourinho has identified Everton striker Beto as an alternative target for Fenerbahce, according to Sporx.

Writing on their X account (12 July), the Turkish outlet stated that 19-time title winners Fenerbahce will target a move for Beto if they fail in their attempts to sign Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri, which is now looking likely.

Fenerbahce looked set to secure the signing of En-Nesyri but are now at risk of losing out on the player to Saudi Arabian side Al Qadsiah.

Borussia Dortmund striker Niclas Fullkrug and Chelsea’s Armando Broja are also on the list of targets for the Turkish side.

Should Everton cash in on Beto this summer?

There was a sense of excitement around Goodison Park last summer when the club confirmed the signing of Beto from Udinese for £25million (Sky Sports, 29 August 2023).

The Portuguese striker scored 21 goals goal in 62 Serie A appearances and hit double digit figures in both of his two seasons in Italy.

He has struggled to replicate that from in the Premier League and only managed three goals in 30 appearances for the Toffees.

Now after one season in England, Beto could be on the move again as Everton target further offensive recruits this summer.

The Blues have already confirmed the signing of forward Iliman Ndiaye from Marseille for £15m (BBC Sport, 3 July), and welcomed back Leeds winger Jack Harrison for a second loan spell.

Beto’s future remains uncertain

Everton have also agreed a deal to sign Hull City winger Jaden Philogene (Paul Joyce, 9 July) but face competition from Ipswich Town and Aston Villa.

It looked likely that Dominic Calvert-Lewin would be the striker to leave Goodison Park this summer, but a proposed move to Newcastle United collapsed before the PSR deadline as the Magpies deemed the £40m move too costly (Sky Sports, 24 June).

Sean Dyche now faces a difficult decision on whether he should stick or twist with Beto and give him one more year to prove himself in the Premier League.

Everton are unlikely to recoup the fee they paid Udinese for his services last year, but given the uncertainty surrounding the club with PSR once again, the Blues cannot afford to let him go at a cut-price fee next summer if he fails to perform for another season.
