Everton academy product leaves Goodison Park amid signing race between two English clubs

Blackburn Rovers are set to win the race to sign Jack Barrett after he was released by Everton, according to Alan Nixon.

The journalist reported via his Patreon account on 12 July that the goalkeeper was headed for Ewood Park after being on the bench for them last week during a trial.

Fleetwood Town also want the 22-year-old, who departed the Toffees this summer without making a first-team appearance, but are set to miss out to John Eustace’s side.

Jack Barrett did not make a senior Everton appearance

Everton had announced triggered an option in Barrett’s contract a year ago to keep him up the club for another season.

But he was then sent on loan to Canadian side Cavalry FC in January and only made one appearance there so now appears set for a new opportunity in the Championship.

At his age and with little sign of a breakthrough into the first-team squad under Sean Dyche a Toffees exit looks like the only real option and catching on at Blackburn appears a decent move for the Englishman.

Three Lions star Jordan Pickford may be the undisputed number one at Goodison but in terms of back-up there is Joao Virginia with six appearances since first arriving from Arsenal as many years ago and neither Billy Crellin or Harry Tryer have yet featured.

The Toffees have put some effort into making signings for the age-group sides this summer with a series of attacking deals secured and more potentially on the cards.

And while Barrett heads down to the Championship Everton have been attempting to bring Jaden Philogene in the opposite direction in an increasingly dramatic race that may finally be reaching a conclusion.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are now close to a deal with a Premier League club on another new signing.
