Everton favourite Jordan Pickford sends message to fans after quit decision made

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has sent a heartfelt message after Gareth Southgate’s decision to quit as England manager.

Following 102 matches in charge of the Three Lions, Southgate announced his decision on Tuesday (16 July) to step down from the role he has occupied for the last eight years.

England were on the cusp of lifting the Euro 2024 trophy before losing the final 2-1 to Spain, prompting an outpouring of emotions from players, staff, former players and fans alike, including Pickford.

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday (16 July), the Toffees shot-stopper wrote: “Completely gutted. This will hurt for a while.

“I appreciate everyone who supported us during the tournament and I’d like to thank all my teammates and staff for their work throughout.

“I also want to say a special thank you to the boss for always believing in me during his time with us and I would like to wish him all the best in his next steps. Thank you, Gareth.”

Pickford can certainly hold his head high following another great tournament for the keeper, who has been a regular ever since Southgate took charge in 2016.

Having been with the Three Lions squad since 2015, the 30-year-old has racked up 68 appearances in an England shirt and is always massively proud of his achievements, and rightly so.

Pickford is one of the most consistent players in the squad and has been over the last few years, maintaining his spot in between the sticks for each major tournament.

Of course, the players will be devastated by how the tournament finished, with many fans frustrated by the playing style throughout the tournament, but everyone was brought together by the Spain loss.

It will be an interesting time as the FA begin their search for a new manager, especially with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, but Southgate leaves the squad dreaming of the next tournament.
