Everton shock emerges as ‘strange’ Dele Alli agreement is reached at Goodison Park
Bryan King is shocked that Everton are considering offering ex-Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli a new contract at Goodison Park.
The ex-Goodison scout believes the 28-year-old has plenty of work to do if he is to return to his best.
As reported by BBC Sport’s Nizaar Kinsella via X (13 July), Spurs and the Toffees have reached an agreement to waive a fee that would have been due if Dele signed a new Everton deal.
But according to The Athletic (16 July), Everton are yet to decide on whether or not to re-sign the midfielder despite their agreement with Tottenham.
And King – speaking exclusively to Goodison News – has questioned why the club would want to.
“I am very surprised by this, to be honest,” King said.
“If he’s up for it then of course he has got to have a go, but is he up for it, does he want to stay at Everton?
“It seems strange to me that the club would want to offer him a new deal after the way things have gone. However, at one stage he was a top-quality player.
“Therefore, if he is up for it and ready to work, he’ll soon know whether he wants it or not. He has got a lot of work to do to get back to any sort of match fitness that is for sure.”
Everton weighing up whether or not to offer Dele Alli a new deal at Goodison Park
It would be a big gamble if Sean Dyche’s side were to offer Alli a new deal.
While they won’t have to pay an initial fee to Tottenham, future performance-related bonuses would still be owed to the North London club.
It could therefore cost the Toffees quite a considerable amount of money to re-sign a player who hasn’t been at his best for several years.
However, when he is at his best, he is a fantastic player, and it is therefore understandable why the club might be tempted.
