Everton transfer priority revealed as development emerges on Kalvin Phillips
Everton view Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips and Leeds United attacker Wilfried Gnonto as their leading transfer targets, according to Give Me Sport.
The news outlet claimed on 18 July that their sources revealed that Sean Dyche sees Phillips as a replacement for the Aston Villa-bound Amadou Onana.
Despite having limited funds, the Manchester City outcast is understood to be a priority for the Toffees.
Everton must avoid signing Kalvin Phillips
While Phillips’ lack of game time was because he was the understudy to Rodri, arguably the best midfielder in the world, he did not do himself any favours on loan at West Ham.
Pep Guardiola called him “exceptional” back in November 2023, but it’s evident that he sees no way back for the 28-year-old in his squad.
Then there are issues with his injuries which could recur at any time and that would see the Toffees not getting the returns they want on their investment.
His transfer fee and wages would be a significant financial risk for Everton, especially considering their financial constraints and the need to make smart, cost-effective signings.
The new owners must prioritise responsible spending and avoid wasting money on a player who has struggled to live up to expectations.

The Merseyside outfit should focus on securing players with proven track records and who fit the team’s style of play, rather than taking a gamble on Phillips.
In other Everton news, the Toffees are now set to submit a bid to sign an international attacker and they’re confident of winning a 10-club race to seal the transfer.
