Everton and Wolves transfer race concludes as £16.9m fee agreed for Jake O’Brien

Everton have agree a fee worth around £16.9million to sign defender Jake O’Brien from Lyon, according to Mike McGrath.

The Telegraph journalist reported via his personal X account on Saturday (27 July) that there are still formalities to complete, such as the 23-year-old Ireland international’s medical, which is set to be held early next week.

It is understood that Everton faced competition from Wolves and Ajax in the bid to sign O’Brien but it looks as though he’s going to be on his way to Goodison Park in the coming days.

Everton still have money in the bank despite takeover blow

What’s really encouraging about this deal is that it shows Everton still have some money to spend despite two failed takeovers of the club.

Just over a week ago, Dan Friedkin backed out of his agreement with Farhad Moshiri while the protracted 777 Partners saga also petered out earlier this year.

Everton have made money on transfers this summer with Amadou Onana and Lewis Dobbin joining Aston Villa for £50million and £10million respectively and Ben Godfrey going to Atalanta for around £11million.

Tim Iroegbunam (£9million) and Iliman Ndiaye (£15million) have also arrived permanently with Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom joining on loan.

Now it looks like O’Brien’s arrival will take the Blues’ spend to around £40million, which still means they’ve made a profit thanks to the £71million worth of sales.

The Toffees might have struggled with PSR in the last few years but it seems as though they may have turned a corner and are getting things back on track.

O’Brien is a good young defender who could also be someone with massive re-sale value in the future to further aid the Blues’ cause.
