Everton make new Wilfried Gnonto decision as transfer twist emerges at Goodison Park

Everton have cooled their interest in Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto, according to FootballTransfers.

The online source reported [29 July] that, while the 20-year-old is open to the switch to Goodison Park having been linked with the Toffees before, the club are set to explore alternative options.

The Merseyside club were convinced they could finalise an agreement to sign Gnonto after submitting another bid recently [Caught Offside], but that now looks unlikely.

Everton to miss out on Wilfried Gnonto again?

It is well documented that the Toffees were interested in Gnonto last summer, with the player going as far as to submit a transfer request at Elland Road.

Those same links have emerged again after Leeds failed to win promotion to the Premier League last season, with the winger playing an important role towards the end of the campaign.

Despite the financial concerns arising at Goodison Park recently, with Dan Friedkin pulling out of his takeover bid, the incomings have not slowed down for the Merseyside club.

Lyon’s Jake O’Brien looks set to be signing five of the summer, with his medical taking place on Monday 29 July [Joe Thomas], following the additions of Jack Harrison, Tim Iroegbunam, Iliman Ndiaye and Jesper Lindstrom.

While Gnonto – who was dubbed “lively” by fellow teammate Joe Gelhardt [BBC Radio Leeds] – is an exciting potential transfer, there are other areas of the squad that could be targeted.

Harrison and Lindstrom are capable of occupying the wings, adding some much-needed attacking threat down each flank, while the full-back spots look to be more of a concern this summer.

Vitaliy Mykolenko is currently the only option at left-back, with veteran duo Ashley Young and Seamus Coleman deputising on the opposite flank.

Given the Ukrainian’s recent injury concerns, another left-back might need to be the next signing at Goodison Park before a star such as Gnonto is added to the squad.
