Joël Matip makes Everton decision after Liverpool exit as transfer twist emerges

Joël Matip is not interested in signing for Everton following his Liverpool exit, according to Kicker.

The German news publication reported online (7 August) that Matip is not considering a return to the Premier League after leaving Anfield earlier this summer.

Everton, Fulham and Bayer Leverkusen have all been credited with an interest in the free agent (via Caught Offside, 5 August).

Leverkusen are likely to move for Matip should Jonathan Tah sign for Bayern Munich.

Everton to miss out on ex-Liverpool defender Joël Matip

Matip would have been quite the coup for Sean Dyche.

His experience at the highest level would have been beneficial to the Toffees next season, and the fact that he is a free agent would have made a deal relatively straightforward.

It would have been a cheap signing for the club which made sense. However, it looks as though a deal is now off the cards.

With Matip reportedly not interested in a return to the Premier League, his decision to snub interest from Everton might have come as a result of his connection to Liverpool.

Matip spent many years with Everton’s fiercest foes and therefore perhaps didn’t want to tarnish his legacy at Anfield by joining the club’s Merseyside rivals.

However, following the addition of Jake O’Brien, and with Jarrad Branthwaite yet to be sold, Dyche is unlikely to be too concerned at this moment in time about missing out on Matip.
