Richard Keys shares ‘huge problems’ at Everton after developments

Richard Keys has been left concerned for Everton after Sean Dyche’s side were condemned to a 3-0 defeat by Brighton on Saturday (17 August).

The Seagulls opened the scoring against the run of play, with Kaoru Mitoma hitting the back of the net before Dominic Calvert-Lewin had a penalty claim waved away moments into the second half.

This was quickly followed by Danny Welbeck doubling Brighton’s lead, which was made severely worse as Ashley Young saw red, and Simon Adingra added a late third to seal the victory.

Taking to X on Monday (19 August) – when asked if he could see Everton relegated – Keys said: “I think they’ve got huge problems.”

Everton at risk of another relegation battle?

After just one match of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, it is far too early to tell how the Toffees will fare after a good summer of transfer acquisitions.

The confusing thing about their opening match, however, was the lack of new signings in the starting XI after bringing multiple faces through the Goodison Park doors.

Tim Iroegbunam was the only new signing that Dyche started against Brighton after joining from Aston Villa, with Iliman Ndiaye, Jake O’Brien and Jesper Lindstrom making the bench.

Given Everton’s struggles in the final third last term, it is a strange decision to see the new attacking signings stuck on the bench, even after quite a decent pre-season display from Ndiaye and Lindstrom.

Dyche has worked wonders with the Merseyside club before, having led the club 14 points clear of the relegation zone, including the Toffees being deducted eight points due to two PSR breaches.

Despite this, there are areas that need working on as soon as possible if the Toffees are to steer away from the dropzone after consecutive seasons in a relegation dogfight.

In other Everton news, the Toffees must get creative to seal a deal for Scott McTominay at Manchester United.
