Everton to make possible double-signing before transfer deadline after Asmir Begovic
Everton will make a maximum of two more signings before the transfer window shuts next week, according to Alan Myers.
The Sky Sports journalist responded via X on 23 August to questions about potential business before the deadline to indicate incoming activity will likely be minimal.
He also suggested that a midfielder and a right-back are two likely positions that will be targeted if signings are to be made.
Sean Dyche had wanted long-term target Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City [Liverpool Echo, 14 August] before he joined Ipswich Town on loan, and interest in wantaway Newcastle right-back Kieran Trippier was reported by David Ornstein in The Athletic on 22 August.
Sean Dyche to look for more Everton additions in transfer window
It might not look like it when Sean Dyche is already facing the prospect of being unable to name a full bench at Tottenham this weekend but the Toffees have managed to do a decent amount of business this summer.
Amid the descent into almost-constant financial chaos in the latter years of the Farhad Moshiri reign it has become customary for fans to be left disappointed by minimal new signings.
But after Everton confirmed the re-signing of Asmir Begovic on 23 August that takes the total up to six permanent or loan arrivals, with help secured in attack, midfield and defence.
Tim Ireogbunam was the stand-out performer in the 3-0 defeat to Brighton on the opening day to suggest that Dyche doesn’t necessarily need to target a starter at the position, as Phillips would surely have been.
Ashley Young’s red card in that game has seen him suspended at a time when both the other two specialist right-backs, and stand-in option from midfield James Garner are all out as part of a major injury crisis.
If cheap, low-risk options were available to flesh out the depth in those areas it would make sense to bring more in, just as it surely still would at left-back.
But finances are tight and will only get tighter unless John Textor can make major progress towards a takeover so it will be hard to find the right quality at an acceptable price.
If Dominic Calvert-Lewin is suddenly sold before the deadline [TEAMtalk, 20 August] that could fund a few cheaper acquisitions but would require a replacement striker above all.
