Richard Keys takes swipe over Everton after seeing story in The Sun today
Richard Keys has taken a swipe at former Everton manager Rafael Benitez over his comments published in The Sun.
The pundit replied to the article on his X account [24 August] and blasted the former Blues manager for his remarks regarding a return to England.
Benitez, who has managed both Liverpool and Everton, revealed on The Overlap [21 August] that he has turned down several opportunities to return to the Premier League.
In reply to comments made by Benitez, Keys said: “‘There are teams I won’t coach’ Who Rafa? You had no problem working at Chelsea or Everton.”
Rafa Benitez at Everton feels like a fever dream
When Everton unveiled Rafa Benitez as the new manager in 2021, the announcement sent shockwaves around Merseyside.
The Spaniard was at the Anfield helm for six years between 2004-2010 and won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005.
Benitez started well at Goodison Park, winning his first four matches in charge, but as expected the Blues’ form fell off a cliff towards the midway point of the campaign and he was dismissed in January 2022 after six months in the job.
All allegiance to Liverpool dissipated when he signed on the dotted line for their city rivals. He restored some relationship with his former club for the horrendous job he performed while in charge and will always be a hated figure among the Toffees’ fanbase.
The words “Benitez” and “The Sun” alone will antagonise the city of Liverpool for differing reasons, never mind just the blue half.
With Sean Dyche at the helm, Everton are in a much stronger position despite the disappointing 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion on the Premier League opening day.
Benitez will join the long list of errors by Farhad Moshiri to reminisce when he eventually concludes the sale of the club – whenever that may be.
