Gonzalo Montiel makes transfer decision as Everton initiate contact

Everton target Gonzalo Montiel turned down the chance to move to PSV Eindhoven as he does not want to play in the Eredivisie, according to ABC.

The Spanish news outlet reported on 25 August that the Toffees have made initial contact over the transfer pursuit of the 27-year-old by launching an inquiry.

Along with them, Nottingham Forest too, are keen on signing the 2022 World Cup winning right-back for Argentina.

Gonzalo Montiel can be the backup Everton target for Kieran Trippier

Montiel turning down PSV could be an indicator that he wants to play in the Premier League again, after his loan spell at Forest last season.

The fact that things haven’t advanced yet with Forest suggests that the 27-year-old is keeping his options open.

Had he been desperate to return to the City Ground, the move would not have taken until the final days of the transfer window to materialise.

This certainly plays into the hands of Everton who are looking to sign a new right-back before the transfer window closes.

Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier’s name has popped up [The Telegraph] and Montiel appears to be a backup target in case they fail to sign the latter.

The advantage with Trippier is that he can also fill in at left-back, but if Montiel joins, Ashley Young can be viewed as the second-choice left-back so it won’t be a bad deal to go ahead with.
