Richard Keys issues David Moyes to Everton verdict as Sean Dyche sack pressure grows

Richard Keys has suggested David Moyes could make a return as Everton manager as his “heart lies at Goodison” amid growing pressure on Sean Dyche.

The beIN Sports host wrote on his blog on 26 August that the current Toffees boss deserves some of the blame for the current mess after the season started with a pair of heavy defeats to Brighton and Tottenham but points the main expletive-ridden responsibility at Farhad Moshiri.

However, he hinted at a managerial change all the same which would bring back the former boss, who is now available after leaving West Ham this summer.

Keys wrote: “Do we blame Dyche? Yea – a little bit. But it’s not his fault either really. He’s doing his best. The bottom like is it’s a [expletive]-show at Goodison. It’s clearly Moshiri’s fault.”

He later added: “David Moyes? I wonder. I love big Dychey – but David Moyes? I don’t know. But I do know this – his heart lies at Goodison. It always has.”

Farhad Moshiri to blame after Everton loss to Tottenham

There is no getting away from the fact that the opening two results of the Premier League season have been dismal for Everton, stripping away any optimism built up during a reasonable transfer window and seeing calls for him to go [talkSPORT, 22 August].

If things don’t improve there will be nowhere to hide for anyone involved, but at this stage of the season it is easy to overreact.

Dyche can rightly point to the fact that he is already dealing with a major injury crisis which makes a huge difference to any manager and the end of the transfer window is causing its own uncertainty.

And despite his faults he has also proven he can turn things around after overcoming a slow start last season, and a pair of points deductions, to produce a finish that would have been good enough for mid-table otherwise.

It is certainly true that some of his team selections, tactics, and substitutions can be called into question.

But in light of the chaos he is operating under thanks to Moshiri’s repeated failed attempts to sell the club it would clearly be a risk to get rid of him, if the majority shareholder is even interested in making a change.

At the same time, there is a reason Moyes is not at West Ham any more and some of the Hammers fans might suggest that many of the criticisms levelled at Dyche could also be directed at the Scot.

He is probably the only Premier League manager who might realistically come in at this stage and may have more credit in the bank with the fans than Dyche, even allowing for his exit to Manchester United, but he doesn’t look like a certain improvement.
