Chelsea suddenly want Dominic Calvert-Lewin to finance Everton exit for Armando Broja

Chelsea are “suddenly” considering a move to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a way to allow Armando Broja to join Everton, according to The Athletic.

The outlet reported in their weekly Transfer Deal Sheet on 27 August that the Stamford Bridge striker’s proposed £30million loan-to-buy exit to Ipswich is under threat due to a foot injury suffered in training.

The Toffees would need to raise funds to act on their “long-standing interest” in Broja and Chelsea are looking to sign a striker, most notably Napoli’s Nigerian star Victor Osimhen.

But the big-spending London side are also considering other options and that is said to be why they are now looking at Calvert-Lewin, as a way to find a solution to Broja’s situation.

Armando Broja could move to Everton as Ipswich deal falters

Chelsea are the biggest spenders in Europe through the current transfer window followed by La Liga giants Atletico Madrid [Football 365, 26 August].

The two clubs recently pulled off a similar double-transfer as Joao Felix was brought back to the Premier League as a way to finance Atleti taking Conor Gallagher to Madrid.

Sean Dyche has made clear publicly that Everton are cash-strapped as the end of the window approaches [BBC Sport, 24 August], but if Chelsea are that desperate to get money for Broja booked they appear ready to help the Toffees do a deal.

It could also help with the accounts at Goodison Park, where the club are still facing the threat of another PSR charge as it is [Kieran Maguire, 6 August], and with Calvert-Lewin refusing to sign a new contract it would remove the threat of losing him for nothing next summer.

Broja is reportedly keen to join the Toffees if the opportunity arises [i News, 12 August] and it is starting to look like it might do.

But if the foot injury he has suffered is bad enough to potentially bring down his move to Portman Road then Everton should proceed with caution themselves, given they are already in the midst of an injury crisis.

In other Everton news, Farhad Moshiri could sack Dyche within a matter of weeks.
