Everton ready to sell Mason Holgate at last minute in new transfer decision

Everton want to sell Mason Holgate before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Friday (30 August), according to Harry Watkinson.

The TEAMtalk journalist reported via his personal X account [29 August] that Championship and European clubs have enquired about a loan deal, though the Toffees would prefer a permanent move.

It is understood that Holgate’s £72,000-per-week salary is a “big obstacle” for the club finding a deal before the August 30 deadline, with the possibility of the defender leaving as a free agent instead.

Mason Holgate to depart Everton before 30 August?

It is no surprise to see Holgate linked with an exit before the transfer window slams shut, especially after the signing of Jake O’Brien from Lyon earlier this summer.

Despite concerns over James Tarkowski’s fitness, and Jarrad Branthwaite yet to return from injury, the 27-year-old has only been given five minutes on the pitch since the new season started.

He only made nine Premier League starts last term, having been sent to Southampton and Sheffield United on two six-month loans, but neither move really worked out for any parties.

Having failed to make the desired impact at St Mary’s Stadium, he was called back from his loan before joining the Blades but picked up a red card in just his third appearance.

While the centre-back has over 150 appearances at Goodison Park, it seems that it is only a matter of time before he leaves the club, not dependent on whether a transfer fee is received.

Sean Dyche’s defence was one of the main positives from the 2023/24 campaign, with only Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool conceding fewer Premier League goals, and Holgate had limited impact on that.

He certainly has enough talent to thrive in the Championship, but with his confidence at an all-time low, his future no longer lies on Merseyside.
