Everton transfer twist as update emerges on Sofyan Amrabat pursuit

Everton are unlikely to sign midfielder Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina this week, the Daily Mirror reports.

On page 59 of the print edition [29 August] on Thursday morning, it is expected that a deal will go through instead for Orel Mangala on a loan-to-buy deal from Lyon.

Fabrizio Romano [27 August] first reported via X on Tuesday that the Toffees had made contact with Amrabat’s representatives to enquire about the possibility of a move.

The priority for Sean Dyche and Everton in the final days of the transfer window appears to be a defensive midfielder, with Mangala anticipated to sign from John Textor-owned Lyon.

Former Nottingham Forest man Mangala has been reported to be joining in a loan deal with an option to buy for a sum that has swelled to £33.7m, which David Anderson [28 August] then reported would be an obligation to purchase the player next year.

Amrabat has started both of Fiorentina’s two opening games in Serie A this season, but may be set for another chance in the Premier League having flopped at Manchester United last term.

The 57-cap Moroccan played 21 times in the league for United in 2023-24, but was fairly quickly dispensed with as Erik ten Hag moved onto new longer-term targets.

Everton are still seeking the key central player following the £50m sale of Amadou Onana to Aston Villa.
