Everton in talks with Sheffield Wednesday after Mason Holgate transfer developments

Sheffield Wednesday are talking to Everton over the possible signing of Mason Holgate, according to Alan Myers.

The Sky Sports journalist has reported that the Championship side is looking into the late signing ahead of the 11 pm transfer deadline on 30 August.

Everton are said to want Holgate gone before the deadline, and could even let him go for free with his £72,000-a-week wages an obstacle [Harry Watkinson].

Everton to sell Mason Holgate today

With limited funds available and only loan signings on the cards as things stand, it would be smart to get some big money off the wage bill.

Holgate has been borderline useless for a couple of years now, with his failed loan moves to Southampton and Sheffield United proving that last season.

No offence to Sheffield Wednesday, but their interest shows his level and the fact that he couldn’t get any minutes during a defensive crisis at the start of this season proves he is surplus to requirements at Goodison Park.

Holgate returned to training at Finch Farm this summer but was never wanted by Dyche [Liverpool Echo], and he could get his exit before the deadline.

This looks best for both parties, with the Toffees saving some money and Holgate getting more guaranteed game time in South Yorkshire.
