Mason Holgate exit update at Everton as West Brom work on deadline-busting transfer

West Brom are working hard on a deadline-busting deal to sign Everton defender Mason Holgate according to Lewis Cox.

The Express and Star journalist reported via X on Friday (30 August) that the Championship side are attempting to secure the Toffees defender on a season-long loan from Goodison Park before the deadline.

Fellow Championship side Sheffield Wednesday were understood to be in talks with the Blues over the defender’s availability [Alan Myers, 30 August] with Sean Dyche’s side keen to get rid of him before the transfer window slams shut [Harry Watkinson, 29 August].

Will Mason Holgate exit Everton amid West Brom transfer rumours?

The Toffees seem to be desperate to get Holgate off of their wage bill this summer and while a permanent deal would be preferable, a loan deal until the end of the season could be the best solution at this stage.

Albion likely aren’t in the position to pay a transfer fee for the defender this summer having already spent well this summer, but a move to The Hawthorns could well appeal to Holgate given his history with the Baggies.

The 27-year-old spent a period on loan with the Baggies in the 2018/19 season and the opportunity to return to the Midlands either on a temporary or permanent basis could be too good for him to turn down so late in the window.

With Jarrad Branthwaite heading nowhere, James Tarkowski undroppable under Dyche and Jake O’Brien now waiting in the wings, it is hard to see Holgate getting a sniff of first-team action at Goodison between now and the end of the season.

Hopefully, the Baggies will be able to get this deal over the line before the window slams shut at 11pm. It won’t be easy given how late their interest has arisen, but stranger things have happened in the summer transfer window.
