Sheffield Wednesday in last-gasp hunt for Everton defender Mason Holgate
Sheffield Wednesday are looking to sign Everton defender Mason Holgate on transfer deadline day, according to Jacque Talbot.
The transfersdotcom journalist reported on 30 August that the Hillsborough outfit are eyeing a last-gasp swoop for the 27-year-old.
Holgate spent the first half of last season on loan at Southampton and moved to Sheffield United for the second half of it.
Everton should be open to Mason Holgate’s departure
The Toffees would likely be content with selling Holgate to Sheffield Wednesday as his inconsistent performances and injury issues have made him a less reliable option in Everton’s squad.
His tumultuous time on loan at Southampton and Sheffield United highlighted a lack of regular playing time and integration into the first team, suggesting a need for a fresh start elsewhere.
Financially, offloading Holgate’s wages could provide the Toffees with the necessary funds to pursue other transfer targets or bolster their squad in other areas.
Moreover, with the emergence of other defenders at Goodison Park, Holgate’s role has become increasingly marginal, making his departure a logical step for squad harmony and development.
Sheffield Wednesday’s interest could also mean a lower transfer fee or even a loan with an option to buy, which suits Everton’s strategy of managing their wage bill while potentially gaining a future profit if Holgate revitalises his career.
This move would clear up squad space, allowing the club to focus on players more aligned with their long-term vision.
