Stephen Warnock forced into climbdown on Everton comment on BBC during loss v Bournemouth

Stephen Warnock was made to eat his words after Everton struck early in the second half in their loss to Bournemouth.

The BBC Sport pundit stated during half-time of Saturday’s (31 August) contest, with the score level at 0-0, that it would be a while longer yet before the Toffees scored their first goal of the season.

However, Michael Keane opened the scoring five minutes after the restart to the amusement of the Full Time studio.

Reminded of his comment, Warnock replied [31 August, 4:08pm]: “I’ll get my coat.

“They’ve done well to keep the ball alive and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, a pedestrian last week, wins the first header for Michael Keane to get a low strike past Kepa – he had no chance.”

Michael Keane temporarily sparks Everton into life

Keane has many critics among the Everton fanbase, but his goal early in the second half looked like being the moment that turned the Toffees’ campaign around.

That may some strange to say just two-and-a-half games into a campaign, but it was looking bleak at the midway point against Bournemouth.

Keane’s strike was followed soon after by Calvert-Lewin’s goal and the Toffees looked good value for their first three-point haul of the campaign from there.

The less said about the final 10 minutes the better, with all those previous fears coming to the fore.

In fairness to Warnock, he was justified in his comments because Everton lacked a killer edge in front of goal up to half-time.

After heavy losses to Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham, this loss to Bournemouth – especially given the circumstances – will only lead to more questions being asked of Sean Dyche.

These next two weeks could be very long indeed.
