Ally McCoist moots ‘major problem’ for Sean Dyche after Everton loss v Bournemouth
Ally McCoist has fears that the Everton squad could be affected psychologically following the shock 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday (31 August).
Goals from Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin saw the Toffees take a 2-0 lead, and even after a consolation effort from Antoine Semenyo in the 87th minute, Sean Dyche’s side were expected to win all three points.
However, the Cherries had a very different plan, with Lewis Cook and Luis Sinisterra notching in the final seven minutes of added time to secure an unexpected 3-2 win at Goodison Park.
Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday (2 September, 7:23am), McCoist said: “I actually could not believe that. I’m seeing the results coming through, looking at it with five minutes to go – I thought it was a bit of relief for Everton.
“The biggest concern for me right now, and Sean Dyche, is the mental effect on the team. Of course, it can happen to anyone at any time, but Everton need a break somewhere along the line.
“If that result, how it happened, gets into the players’ heads and affects them mentally, that could be a major problem. They do have a manager who won’t allow that to happen. They’ll look at it, then it needs to be put to bed. You do not want to think about it because it can come back to haunt you.”
Everton to be haunted by Bournemouth collapse?
While the loss to Bournemouth was a tough one to take for the manager, players and fans alike, all must put the result behind them if they are to drag themselves out of the dropzone.
The Toffees are currently at the foot of the Premier League table following defeats to Brighton, Tottenham and Bournemouth, conceding 10 goals in that time.
Dyche’s defence was one of the main positives last season, but with Jarrad Branthwaite yet to return from injury, the backline has collapsed at Goodison Park.

Of course, the players are bound to be mentally affected by how they lost on Saturday 31 August. However, there are still 35 matches of the season remaining, and they must make those opportunities count.
The club have an international break to reset, which will be essential as they prepare to face Aston Villa on Saturday 14 September, and they must all stick together rather than replace the manager already.
