Everton fans labelled ‘pathetic’, ‘odd bunch’ in national newspaper

Harry Brent has slammed “pathetic” Everton supporters who turned on their own players following the recent loss to Tottenham.

A small number of Toffees fans were filmed shouting abuse at players including Neal Maupay at Euston station after the 4-0 loss on 24 August.

Writing in his column for the Daily Star‘s print edition [4 September, page 43], journalist Brent did not hold back in his assessment.

“Everton fans are an odd bunch,” he said. “They’ll set fireworks off outside opponents’ hotels to give their beloved lads an edge, then wait for said beloved lads at the train station to berate them because they lost to [checks notes] a Tottenham side who finished 26 points above them last season.

“I’ll never understand why fans abuse their own players after a defeat. It’s as illogical as punching your own car after it stalls, or joining Arsenal to win the Champions League.

“There’s being passionate and there’s been a pathetic, hot-headed twerp. It’s hard enough being an Everton player.

“They could really do without the scummy Toffees low lives pouncing on them like Dominic Calvert-Lewin pounces on the latest Chanel handbags.”

Everton fans have simply had enough

First and foremost, the player did not deserve to be on the end of verbal abuse up close after the defeat in the capital 11 days ago.

The analogy has been used countless times since, but you would not expect to be shouted at in the face in your own workplace.

At the same time, those supporters are quite simply disgusted at the level of performances they have seen from their players all too often.

The defeat to Spurs was supposed to be the nadir; then came a 3-2 home loss to Bournemouth in which Everton led 3-0 in the 86th minute.

Everton fans are among the most loyal out there, but that support is not reciprocated and that is what makes this a confusing relationship.

Ultimately, it is on the players to grind out results and that is not happening at the moment. Once they do so, they will have nothing but love.
