Idrissa Gueye hailed as ‘essential’ for Senegal despite 5/10 rating for Everton ace
Idrissa Gana Gueye was branded “essential” to the Senegal side despite an underwhelming 5/10 rating for the Everton star against Burundi by WIW Sport.
The website [9 September] rated the team’s performances as Gueye played just over 60 minutes of his nation’s win in Malawi against the Burundian opponents, with the Senegalese grabbing a 1-0 win thanks to Ismaila Sarr’s second-half penalty.
Toffees teammate Iliman Ndiaye was introduced on the hour mark for a side which also featured Sadio Mane, Edouard Mendy and Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson.
WIW Sport said of Gueye on his 115th senior cap: “Unlike his two midfield partners, the Everton player was closer to the Senegalese defence.
“As in his last selections, he was essential for his team. Very present in the recovery, he often put his partners into orbit thanks to his sense of passing.”

Gueye has featured heavily for Everton so far this season, having played 90 minutes in each of the club’s Premier League games.
Despite several disappointments from the team as a collective, Gueye has shown some positive moments and has not been one to face the chop by Sean Dyche thus far.
The midfielder also started his nation’s 1-1 draw with Burkina Faso in their first international fixture of the current break, playing 82 minutes, as Senegal stand top of their AFCON qualifying group.
Gueye is one of numerous experienced heads in the Blues’ dressing room who must shoulder some responsibility for lifting the team from the difficulties in which they find themselves.
But, at 34 and with triple figures in international caps, he is part of the setup who could prove to be very important throughout the season.
