Farhad Moshiri stance shared after ‘remarkable’ move taken by Everton chief

Chris Bascombe has shared his “remarkable” verdict on the statement released by Everton chief Colin Chong addressing John Textor, which was signed off by Farhad Moshiri.

Textor publicly stated on 11 September, that his proposed purchase of the Blues has a 90 per cent chance of success [Le Progres], prompting the club to release a statement [12 September] via their official channels to address the comments.

Bascombe offered his take on the situation in an article published in The Guardian [12 September], suggesting that the Blues’ response was a worrying sign for the supporters.

He said: “Textor’s interview on Sky Sports, broadcast on Wednesday evening, caused consternation among Everton’s interim board.

“The club’s carefully crafted 119-word statement on behalf of interim chief executive Colin Chong was more remarkable for the fact he felt compelled to release it at all, the undertone being that the comments from the Crystal Palace shareholder regarding how close he was to securing a deal were at best premature and at worst damaging.

“It is understood Moshiri cleared the release of the statement distancing the club from Textor’s remarks – specifically those suggesting the sale is nearing its conclusion – but the owner’s name was noticeably absent from it.

“That did nothing to diminish the perception that Moshiri and those entrusted to run the club are not always on the same page.”

Everton takeover saga rages on

Textor’s public pursuit of Everton certainly ramped up a few notches this week when conducting various interviews, including his televised one with Sky Sports News.

The 53-year-old shocked the fanbase, revealing that the finances at the club, regardless of countless media reports stating the opposite, are actually in a healthy position amid the impending change in ownership.

Textor has added more fuel to the fire given the Toffees’ breaches of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules and reports from financial experts suggesting the club are mounting upwards of £600m in debt [Daily Mail].

With so many conflicting reports emerging, it is hard to make sense of the chaos. While Textor’s bid is the most promising in comparison with the failed attempts from 777 Partners and the Friedkin Group, his comments are doing more harm than good with the uncertainty still surrounding the deal.

Moshiri approved the statement released by the club that distanced themselves from their only prospective owner. As of now, who is and isn’t telling the truth regarding the takeover is unknown and the Everton supporters are set to endure their third prolonged saga.

The fans will hope that this time the story has a happier ending.
